Keyword Basics

By Samuel Waithaka

A search engine uses keywords to create SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). The most basic components of keywords are the placement and density.

Placement: You need to begin by carefully sorting out keywords for your content. To do this, you need to have your target traffic in mind. What would your prospected visitors be looking for? What words would they use? Those are your keywords.
The next step is to have them as part of your content; they should blend to make a good copy. This will as well improve on conversion when keywords are relevant to your content. It’s important to include them on the first paragraph of your pages.
You should then include them in your Meta, that is the description and keywords Meta tags refer to our previous article
MAKE SURE, that your pages title has your keywords too.

Density: The number of times a keyword appears on the page also matters. However should be moderate as too much of it might be considered as spam by some search engines especially Google.

When asking for back links from other sites, make sure that the text for the links contains your keywords (provide the html to make it easier for others to link to you).

As any SEO effort, this is both continuous and long term. Your goal is to achieve higher ratings. There are tools in Google Webmaster Central, that are used to find out which keywords has caused your site to appear in the SERPs. You can then concentrate on those keywords and improve your ranking on them.
