Effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO I)

By Samuel Waithaka

Recently I set out to get some airtime for my pre-paid dial-up connection in a near shop. After failing to get the denomination I wanted, I paused for a moment; I thought about looking elsewhere for a while but then just decided to go back to the house.
How does this relate to your website and SEO? Like many people, you might know some things you need to do to optimize your website but since it’s not convenient to do them, you push them aside. This could as well be costing you much traffic from poor search engine ratings.
In the next few articles, I’ll be discussing tips that can greatly influence your ratings on search engines. My hope is that you’ll go in step with me implementing them along the way, and begin to reap the benefits.

Your Content and Design

Being visible to search has a lot to do with the design of your website. Some design in their nature makes website totally invisible to search engines. One good example is a site that uses frames or a flash site. You need to at times make compromises between design or looks and visibility. Don’t sacrifice visibility over the design. A good test is view source (html); from View menu of your browser. What you see is what the search engines’ crawler sees. If you can’t see your content’s text, then it’s time to reconsider your design. On the next article, I will discuss on how to make a flash site visible.

Page Titles

Always make sure that your pages’ titles have strong words; try to include the keywords. But again, the title should be reasonably short.
It’s important to know that appears on the title is given the top priority. I’ll be talking about keywords in the next post.
